Why Kiln-Dried Lumber Matters

Wood keeps moving after the tree is cut, and how a mill dries it determines whether a dining table stays flat in a customer's house.

A freshly sawn board can be more than half water by weight. As that water leaves, the board shrinks, and it does not shrink evenly. It moves more across the grain than along it, and more tangentially than radially. Every warp, cup, and split a customer eventually complains about traces back to that uneven movement.

Kiln drying is the process of taking the moisture out under control instead of letting the weather do it. Air drying works, and it was the only option for most of the history of the trade, but it takes months and it stops at whatever the outdoor humidity happens to be. A kiln gets the wood to a specified moisture content on a schedule, and it gets it there evenly.

What the target number means

Furniture makers dry to a moisture content matched to the environment the finished piece will live in. A piece built at the wrong number will move once it reaches the customer, expanding in a humid climate or shrinking in a dry one.

Use Typical target moisture content
Exterior work 12 to 15 percent
Interior furniture, humid regions 8 to 10 percent
Interior furniture, dry regions 6 to 8 percent

The number is not a quality grade. It is a match to a destination. Wood dried to the low end and shipped to a coastal market will take on moisture and swell, and a tabletop that swells against a rigid frame will crack somewhere.

Drying too fast

The failure mode that costs manufacturers the most is not underdrying, it is drying too aggressively. If the surface gives up moisture much faster than the core, the outer shell sets in a stretched state while the inside is still shrinking. The board can measure correctly on a meter and still be carrying stress that releases the moment it is ripped on a saw.

A board that pinches the blade or springs away from the fence is telling you about the kiln schedule, not the saw.

That is why mills run conditioning cycles at the end of a kiln run, reintroducing steam to relieve the stress before the lumber is graded and shipped.

What a buyer can ask

Most furniture buyers never see a kiln, but the questions are simple enough to ask a vendor. What moisture content do you dry to, how do you verify it, and do you condition at the end of the run. A vendor who can answer all three has a process. A vendor who answers only the first is quoting a spec rather than describing a practice.
